Iron Deficiency Anemia

What are the tests in iron deficiency anemia?

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): This test measures the number of red blood cells, hemoglobin levels, hematocrit, and other blood components. In iron deficiency anemia, red blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels are typically lower than normal.
  • Peripheral Blood Smear: This test involves examining a sample of your blood under a microscope to assess the shape and size of your red blood cells. In iron deficiency anemia, red blood cells may appear smaller and paler than usual.
  • Serum Ferritin: Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body. Low levels of serum ferritin are a strong indicator of iron deficiency.
  • Serum Iron: This test measures the amount of iron in your blood. Low levels of serum iron can indicate iron deficiency.
  • Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC): TIBC measures the amount of transferrin, a protein that transports iron in the blood. High TIBC levels can be a sign of iron deficiency since the body tries to increase its capacity to transport iron when it's deficient.
  • Transferrin Saturation: This test calculates the percentage of transferrin that is saturated with iron. Low transferrin saturation is another indicator of iron deficiency.
  • Fecal Occult Blood Test: This test detects hidden blood in the stool, which can indicate chronic blood loss, one possible cause of iron deficiency anemia.
  • Endoscopy or Colonoscopy: These procedures may be recommended to investigate the gastrointestinal tract for potential sources of bleeding, which can contribute to iron deficiency anemia.
  • Bone Marrow Examination: In rare cases when the diagnosis is unclear or other underlying conditions are suspected, a bone marrow biopsy may be performed to assess the iron stores in the bone marrow.
